My Bear Lake Memories
I don't remember a whole lot about Bear Lake because I was kind of young and I never did any lake activities. I do remember swimming in the pools, playing on the playground, miniature golfing, and playing games with family. I think my favorite memory is going to get shakes (surprise). I always looked forward to that activity and remember loving the ice cream.

Bear Lake
With the Dibb family reunion quickly approaching I thought it would be fun to share some memories of our reunions at Bear Lake. I know there are many, so post more than once if you would like.

Poor 6th child
I know I was supposed to post this forever ago, but I just found the picture I was looking for. :)
I remember one year I hid eggs for Nathan for an Easter egg hunt. He was still fairly young but the rest of us were too old to care about those kinds of things. We were not planning on having an Easter egg hunt and I felt sorry for him and wanted him to have fun.

I don't know if this picture is of the hunt we had that year or not, but it is still a fun picture that brings back that memory.

Egg Hunt
I don't even remember the details of this story. The only thing I can think of is the time (maybe times) that whoever hid the hard-boiled eggs for the hunt forgot where they all were. I think they stayed hidden until someone sniffed them out. I vaguely remember an egg being found inside of the old floor lamp. I could have totally made this story up in my head, but I hope not because it's kind of funny. :)

Snake attack...
When John and I were young, probably around six and four, we were playing in the backyard of our American Fork house. I remember jumping off of the swing, and heading over to the porch to go in the house. But right there in the middle of the sidewalk, was a big water snake. I started screaming, and John just rolled his eyes at me, walked over to the pile of bricks in the carport, and smashed the snake. He saved my life! From then on, my little brother was my big hero. Happy Birthday John--I love you!
The Major Paper Cut...
I jut HAD to share this memory. It is such a funny family story.
John and I were fighting one time (I know, we never did this, but for some reason we were this night;) ) and he grabbed my vocabulary book (which was about the size of a Primary Manual) from the table and chucked it at me. I'm no dummy, I ducked, and the missile intended for me hit dad right on top of the head. John and I immediately stopped fighting so we could join together laughing at dad writhing in pain. His head was bleeding, and dad said "That is one major paper cut!" Whenever I think about that Pleasant Grove house and High School, I think of my vocabulary book and this crazy story.

Nicknames and Speeding
Being the little sister, sadly, most of what I can remember about John when we were growing up is bad.
The first thing that came to my mind was the time I was forced to ride somewhere with him in his car when he was probably 16. He drove like a maniac and scared me to death. I remember being curled up in the back seat trying not to throw up.
I also can't think of John in his high school years without thinking about his friends (Wolf, Trent, Travis, Poon, Adam. Those are the ones I remember.) that were great friends to him, but not so nice to the rest of us at the time. They had nicknames for a few of us that weren't so nice and some lived on through R.Jay and his friends. The ones I remember were: Helm, Stinky, and Miss Pick Her Butt. I also remember them all teaching Nathan "The Face". That was pretty funny. It's a good thing those boys grew up to be much nicer men!
Happy Birthday John! (I hope you don't feel too bad that these were the memories I decided to share for your birthday!)

I remember when we moved into our first house in St. George that John helped the movers and I believe they gave him some money. He also was excited because they let him ride his Big Wheel down the ramp off of the moving truck.
He used to ride that bike down the hill in front of our house SO fast that it frightened me if I watched. I suppose he has done many things of the adventurous type over the years that I'm glad I haven't seen.
Does anyone remember the baby chick that we had at that house? I think it got sick and John ended up burying it in our yard.
John has always been a kind and sensitive person (despite his trying to act like he isn't) who is willing to help others.
John
In honor of John's birthday, let's all share a memory of him. Try to post your story before Saturday. Label: John

Roller Skates and Overhangs
The very first thing I thought of when I saw the picture was my fear of the little overhang over the garage door. When I was upstairs I used to be scared of walking right next to the windows that were above the garage. I thought that the floor was not supported because it hung over the driveway below instead of the garage. My house framing brothers must be laughing right now!
The second thing I thought of was the empty foundation across the street. I roller-skated over there all the time. I was so sad when someone finally bought it and built a house. I don't even remember the house so it must not have been very long after it was built that we ended up moving.

Red dirt and fake twins...
I thought of two things immediately. The first thing I thought about was this big red dirt hill that was in the back of our house. We had to level most of it to add the addition of the family room that we built on the back. And then the fence we (I keep saying we, like I did some of it!--mostly I watched, and maybe played with Nate and Emily so mom could help) put up in the backyard. I just remember how sad it was to level the hill. It was a fun place to ride bikes and run around on. I also vividly remember Nathan crawling around in the backyard construction in a white and yellow outfit that I loved. I was so sad that it had red dirt all over it, but somehow mom magically got it clean. I still don't know how it was possible that any of us had clean clothes in that red dirt.
I also immediately thought about a time when the Gunnells came to visit. Kelly and I decided to pretend that she was twins. We were trying to trick Dawn S. next door. Kelly and I had shirts that were the same but different colors, so she would put one on and pretend to be one "twin" and then run inside and change and talk out the window as the "other twin." We continued this for an entire day. We thought we were so clever to pull the wool over Dawn's eyes. And then, someone called all of us to the porch to take a picture while Dawn was watching. We, of course, had some odd reason why Kelly's "twin" didn't make it to the porch for the picture. I'm sure Dawn was so confused as to why we were trying to play this stupid trick. Poor girl. We sure had fun with it though. Who'd a thought that twenty years later I would have real twins that try to trick the boys on the bus saying they're the other twin. Funny!
There are so many other memories though. Remember the Phoenix Plaza contest, John?

Killer Dog
This picture brought a lot of things to mind. The first thing I thought was actually how different the house looks now. I now (since I have seen the house recently) picture it with a huge tree in front of it and ugly poop colored doors. (Why is it that as soon as we move out of a house somebody paints the front door some nasty color?) I remember a lot about this house. That may be surprising because I was so young when we lived there, but I have many fond memories of the place. We will have to revisit this subject sometime so that I can share more. The memory I will share this time is not so fond. We lived in this house when I had the recurring nightmares about the big black dog that lived down the street. I'm not sure if it was a rottweiler, but that is what I picture when I think of it. Anyway, I had a nightmare every night for about a week with this dog trying to "get" me. One night, I remember I was at a swimming pool (in my dream) and the dog showed up and chased me through the water and all around the pool deck. The dog never ate me, but in one of the dreams Dad and I were going to the mall and just as we got to the doors the dog ran up to us, ready to attack. Dad jumped to protect me and the dog bit his thumb off. This was a very traumatic time in my life, and I remember the dreams as if they really happened.

"There goes our old car..."
I suppose there are a lot of car memories, but I have to mention this one. When I got married we decided to take the car I drove, the white Tempo with the blue guts, on our honeymoon. Diane and Larry took video of us seeing the decorated car and driving off in wedded bliss. You hear on the wedding video mom and my mother-in-law saying they can't believe we're married and kind of crying at the thought of their babies driving away. And the last thing you hear in the background is dad, "Well, there goes our old car, dear."
I'm pretty sure it was his way of saying that life was changing and we kids were all going to grow up too soon. After all, to dad, a car is just a car that can be traded in any day without the slightest bit of remorse (except for maybe some on mom's part--especially if she never got a picture;).)

I'm feelin' hot, hot, hot
My senior year of high school the car I drove was a 1993 (I think) Ford Escort. The second half of that year we had to drive much farther to school than usual because they were removing the asbestos from our school. We went to our rival school from 12:30 til 5:30pm. It was so hot toward the end of the year. The car started overheating. I don't even remember how long it was until we got the head gasket fixed but I had to drive all the way home with the heater on full blast and the windows down (in Las Vegas heat) so the car would not overheat. Ugh, it was so very hot! R. Jay, I am sure you remember this since you had to ride home in that car too.
Car Sick
The first thing that comes to my mind is the time when we were driving to California (I think) when I was probably around 7ish. We were on a really bumpy road and Nathan and I were starting to feel sick. Mom held up a garbage can in front of us just in case. Well, one of us (I can't remember which, we'll say it was Nathan) couldn't hold it in anymore and started throwing up. As soon as I saw his barf in the can, I couldn't help but let some out myself. So we were throwing up in the same garbage can at the same time. How pleasant that must have been for the others in the car!
I also remember when we lived in St. George that we would always tell Dad to "coast" down the hill on our street.
I know these don't really have to do with the actual car, especially since I can't remember which cars we had at these times, but this will have to do.

This is the plan...
You know how sisters get when they talk together. Thanks to three-way calling, we cooked up a plan to start a family blog. Now we have a place to share memories and more when the mood strikes us (or, probably in our brothers' cases, when teeth are pulled.) We hope to share some fun and memorable times as well as thoughts on life as it is now.
So, to begin. In order to encourage the not-as-willing male members of the family, let's all start with a memory of one of our cars. (I know that's a lot of memories--just try to pick one.) There's the back-in-the-back, the watermelon bomb, the blue guts and the red guts, just to get you thinking. And don't forget to label your post "car memories". Happy blogging!
